Canh Solo: Photographer Profile

August 26th, 2008

This is the homie, Canh. He’s got the eye. He takes photos.

LeftRight first made in-depth contact with Canh earlier this Summer on a trip to Portland with local non-profit organization and LeftRight familia, The Service Board. We got a chance to check out some photos he took, and since then, he’s been getting busy.

Nowadays, anybody can buy a camera and call themselves a “professional photographer,” but something still holds true to having the “photographers’ eye” and that natural talent - and Canh’s got it.

7th Annual Seattle Tattoo Convention

August 7th, 2008

For the past 7 years, Super Genius Tattoo has brought the Northwest’s greatest artists and tattoo talent together to showcase some of the area’s biggest and best ink. The three-day convention will be held within the Fisher Pavilion at the Seattle Center on August 8, 9, and 10th.

The event will feature more than 200 artists, a kids play area with art and games and some great bands like Tiger Army, Nashville Pussy, Nevermore and Vince Mira to name a few.

Check the flyer. Go to the convention. Get some ink. Send us some photos. We plan on writing a follow-up to the convention, and any photos we get will be published on our blog for all the interwebs to see.

Happy tattooing!

iPhone 3G HACKED!

July 16th, 2008

Screenshot of Pwnage, a GUI for hacking the iPhone 3G

The geniuses that make up the iPhone Dev team have once again shocked (not really) the mobile device market by hacking and jailbreaking the new iPhone 3G. Prior to the release of the new iPhone, Apple claimed that the new iPhones were “unhackable” and would decrease the amount of hacked iPhones used for third party carriers, like T-Mobile.

This means on an unlocked iPhone or iPhone 3G, you can update iTunes and the actual hardware device to version 2.0 and have access to all the cool official and unofficial third-party applications without having to sacrifice yourself to the brick relationship that is the iPhone and AT&T.

Now, I’m no genius, but if you tell people, say for example, hackers, that they can’t do something, there’s a 99.9% chance that they’ll figure out how to do it. But that’s just me.

Here’s a hip-hip-hoorah to the dev teams, and another hip-hip-hoorah for developing a pretty GUI to rub it in. Amen for plug-and-play.

iGuess?

I was going to write about the recent madness surrounding the iPhone release, but after thinking about it I decided against it. Unless you live under a rock you have already read plenty about the damn thing. Short story is it’s cool, not totally worth the upgrade if you have the original but still sweet none the less. I was one of the idiots who stood in line for hours on Friday, but only because I fell out of a kayak on the Fourth of July and lost my iPhone to the sea. One too many “beverages” I suppose led to my capsize but after some mourning I moved on. It’s good to have my little iBuddy back though I will say.

One thing I thought I would share with you though is a movie I just watched that was really crazy. It’s called The Bridge. Not for the kiddies. A film crew spent a year camped out by the Golden Gate bridge and filmed the large number of people that come there to end their life. The movie is super heavy and at times hard to watch but it’s not as gruesome as it would seem. They do a good job of making it tasteful and it dives more into the story of the jumpers and interviews their friends and families. Check it out.

Now put the iPhone down and go outside, it’s too nice to be on a computer. Cheers.

The Sonics have left the building…

July 2nd, 2008

Now I don’t really consider myself a sports fan, but I do like to support my city and that support trickles down to the sports teams that play here. The current Sonics owner has been going through some legal troubles recently regarding his desire to break the lease at Key Arena and move the team. When he bought the team he signed a contract with previous owner Howard Schultz promising to do everything within his power to keep the team here.

Well he didn’t try very hard.

The case was settled today to the tune of $75Million bucks. So the team will move to Oklahoma City and Seattle will be left teamless. There is of course some stipulations in the settlement and I won’t bore you with them, but it sounds like our Mayor actually did do his best to stick it to Clay Bennett (the owner). The good thing is we keep the name and the history the team has established here.

I honestly don’t know why this got to me so much, but I think it has to do with this dudes blatant disregard for the people of Seattle. He clearly has been motivated by money all along and would do anything to make that all mighty dollar. Well godspeed buddy, I hope Oklahoma is everything you hoped it would be…..jerk.

Jay-Z stuns critics at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival

July 1st, 2008

Whether you love Jay-Z for his music and empire or hate him for his lyrics and rap-persona, you’ve definitely got to admire him for his versatility, artistry, and pure musical genius - and making history by being the first rap headliner at the Glastonbury Festival. Some headlines seen after the show include:

Rapper ’stole show’ at Glastonbury  - Press Association

Jay-Z puts on world class show - BBC

At this year’s 2008 Glastonbury Festival located in South West England, Jay-Z was slated to headline the infamous festival - the largest festival of its kind in the UK. Former headlining acts include David Bowie, The Cure, Radiohead and Massive Attack to name a few - all in a somewhat similar genre. This year, Glastonbury wanted to try something a little different.

Here is an article published on nme.com on April 14, 2008:

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher: ‘Jay-Z wrong for Glasto’

Noel Gallagher of Oasis

The guitarist says hip-hop is ‘wrong’ for the British festival

Oasis’ Noel Gallagher has said that he thinks the decision to book Jay-Z for a headline set at this year’s Glastonbury festival was incorrect.

Speaking to BBC News, Gallagher said that deviating from the festival’s tradition of booking guitar-based headliners was “wrong”.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” he said. “If you start to break it then people aren’t going to go. I’m sorry, but Jay-Z? No chance.

“Glastonbury has a tradition of guitar music and even when they throw the odd curve ball in on a Sunday night you go ‘Kylie Minogue?’ I don’t know about it. But I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.”

Noel Gallagher has also spoken about Oasis’ UK live plans, responding to repeated rumours the band would play the O2 Arena in London.

bebiendo en mexico

June 24th, 2008

Recently got back from a surf trip in Mexico. Had to escape the Juneuary Seattle was being hit with. Sun, warm water….I need it. So we headed South to indulge. Here are some shots from the trip:

Information Graphics at its finest. These sorts of signs can damper a day at the beach.

This photo came out rad. I love that the point of focus landed where it did.

I hope we have some readers that surf who can appreciate this with me. It broke like this everyday right in front of our house.

Just breathe that in…..

Aside from the sharks, and a few bouts with local wildlife, I’d say a successful trip. Buenos tiempos se había de todos.
